Gear keeps track of what you train on and how far it has gone, so a pair of shoes is retired because of its mileage rather than because it finally fell apart.
Most of it fills itself in. If your watch records which shoes or which bike you used, that comes across with the activity and the kilometres add up on their own. You can also add anything your watch does not know about — a pool snorkel, a set of straps.
Give a piece of gear a limit and TriHonu will tell you when it is near it, and when it is past. Retiring something keeps its history; it just stops counting.
Planned and worn are different questions. Your plan can suggest which bike or which shoes a session is for; what you actually wore comes back from the activity afterwards. Where they disagree, the activity wins — it is the one that happened.
